Cashflow Manager (UK) Ltd
Our mission is to empower small business owners to do their own bookkeeping through the use of innovative technology that is radically simple to use.
The Cashflow Manager range of products were developed by Cashflow Manager Pty Ltd, an Australian company incorporated in 1987, and were introduced into the UK when Cashflow Manager (UK) Ltd commenced operations in 1994.
In fact, one of Cashflow Manager (UK)'s first customers was Lloyds TSB Bank who provided the 'Accounts Manager' manual recordkeeping system to their small business clients for more than 10 years.
Cashflow Manager was founded by Australian CPA Wayne Burgan who had always been passionate about small business after commencing his first business of a guitar school at the age of 14 while still at school himself.
Later, Wayne had a broad career at the Australian Taxation Office that included auditing small business owners.
In his role as an auditor Wayne was exposed first hand to the problems small business owners faced by not keeping good records.
Wayne was passionate about small business and wanted to help them so after 10 years at the ATO, he left and a short time later commenced Burgan & Associates, Certified Practising Accountants.
Because of Wayne's focus on small business, and consultants at the South Australian Small Business Development Corporation soon began referring small business owners either starting out or in need of some expert assistance.
Wayne soon found that the biggest problem the majority of small business owners faced could be traced back to not understanding the bookkeeping side of business.
He explains it this way.
“I would spend an hour or so explaining how to keep financial records, and people would walk out with their head spinning. All of the bookkeeping solutions that were commercially available seemed to assume that the people could understand them, and they weren’t much help at all.”
“So, I designed a set of step by step instructions together with some examples and forms to complete and found that this was the major breakthrough for my clients.”
“And of course, getting good records from our clients reduced the time I needed to spend on ‘compliance work’ as it is called in the accounting industry and gave me more time to help my clients understand how to build a better business.”
“And I knew that if my clients had this need then so did other small business owners, and so Cashflow Manager was born.”
Thousands of small business owners still use that original manual system to this day, although the software, which was designed to mirror the simplicity that made the original manual systems successful, was also introduced in 1996.
Wayne also served on the South Australian Public Practice Committee and the National Small Business Centre for Excellence for CPA Australia (Certified Practicing Accountants) and believed that the accounting profession should be proactively helping their clients to build better businesses, which includes simpler record keeping.
So for the first 15 years, Cashflow Manager was sold in Australia (and the UK) exclusively through accountants.
This model has changed slightly due to a couple of events in recent years.
For example, in November 2004 journalist Peter Switzer who had used Cashflow Manager himself at the recommendation of his accountant, wrote an article in 'The Australian' newspaper where he called Cashflow Manager “one of Australia’s best kept secrets”.
When he interviewed Wayne he told him that he didn’t necessarily mean this as a compliment because the ‘accountant exclusivity’ model meant that the majority of small business owners in Australia who needed the program were totally unaware that it even existed.
So Cashflow Manager no longer has an accountant ‘exclusivity’ model. However, we continue to have an accountant centric model as we still believe that client focused accountants are the best people to be advising their clients about the software they should be using.
